They are needed for many processes in the body and help, for example, with the utilization of some vitamins and the regulation of cholesterol levels. The body can produce so-called saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids itself. Types of fat that the body cannot synthesize itself and must therefore be taken in with the daily diet are referred to as essential fatty acids.

Particularly important, but unfortunately underrepresented in the diet, are the so-called essential fatty acids. polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. They contribute to normal heart function, for example. Because they are only found in a few foods, a targeted intake via a good dietary supplement such as GSE Omega-3 fish oil capsules can be useful.

Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids - better than their reputation, but not essential

Fatty acids differ both in their origin and in their effect on the body. For a vascular and heart-friendly lifestyle, you should aim for a good balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Let me tell you in advance: We can't completely do without any of them - except for harmful trans fatty acids, which are mainly found on our plates in highly processed convenience foods, confectionery and fried foods.

Saturated fatty acids are mainly found in animal-based foods such as meat, sausage, eggs, margarine and dairy products and are even synthesized by the body itself. In the body they play a role, for example, as messenger substances for the nervous system and as a source of energy. In large quantities, they are considered problematic because they can have an unfavorable effect on LDL cholesterol. There is normally no shortage of saturated fatty acids, but rather a surplus.

Monounsaturated, so-called non-essential fatty acids can be synthesized by the body itself and therefore theoretically do not necessarily have to be ingested through food. They are mainly required for good utilization of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K and for a balanced cholesterol level. It is therefore advisable to regularly consume rapeseed and olive oil, nuts, seeds or avocados, which are good sources of monounsaturated fatty acids.

Omega-6 fatty acids - essential, but not deficient

The polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid/ALA and arachidonic acid/AA) cannot be produced by the body itself. Although they have important functions in the body, they can have unfavorable effects on the heart and blood vessels. if their essential "counterpart" omega-3 is missing. This is because both forms are stored in the cell membranes ... and in the competition for the coveted spaces, the one that is present in greater numbers ends up being the most present.

The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be maximum 5:1 which is not so easy when you look at the foods that put large amounts of omega-6 on your plate:
Soybean, sunflower and corn oil (and finished products made with them), margarine, nuts, eggs, meat and dairy products from animals fed on soybean meal. In comparison, omega-3 fatty acids are much more difficult to incorporate into the diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids - the superstars among the fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are divided into alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

ALA is the short-chain precursor of EPA and DHA. Relevant amounts of these are found in linseed, perilla and rapeseed oil, chia seeds and walnuts, for example. The disadvantage of ALA is that the body must first gradually convert it into biologically active EPA and DHA. This results in certain losses, so that larger quantities of ALA are required to reach the recommended daily dose.

The particularly bioavailable long-chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are actually only found in fatty fish species such as salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines or herring as well as some algae. To meet the recommended requirement, one of these fish species should be included in the diet at least twice a week (or even better, daily). The omega-3 fish oil capsules from GSE contain 750 mg of certified organic oil from rainbow trout per capsule, which the body can utilize immediately.

Free from undesirable accompanying substances thanks to fish from certified organic aquaculture

The omega-3 content of a fish depends on the food available to it. Fish caught in the wild or from certified organic farming eat plenty of algae and krill (which in turn feed on algae). This automatically enriches them with DHA and EPA from the primary source of algae. Many omega-3 products are based on oil from industrially farmed fish, but their feed usually consists of soy and grain. Sometimes fish waste is also fed, in which the unstable omega-3 fatty acids have long since oxidized and are therefore ineffective.

Our omega-3 fish oil capsules contain the pure oil from DHA- and EPA-rich rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from certified organic aquaculture. The fish oil is a by-product of fish fillet production. In order to protect the oceans from overfishing, only the trimmings left over from filleting are used for production. This means that no additional fish have to be
caught, which makes production sustainable and climate-neutral.

Who has an increased need for omega-3 fatty acids or DHA & EPA?

People with a tendency towards high LDL cholesterol levels, pregnant women and growing children, for example, have an increased need for DHA and EPA.
